Luke, Haiti and the Olympic Torch

Food for thought and discussion

Luke, Haiti and the Olympic Torch
During these months leading up to Easter in 2010, Canadians read Luke’s Gospel with at least two important events on our horizon. One is the recent earthquake in Haiti; the other is the run of the Olympic Torch leading up to the Games in British Columbia.

While one event is deeply tragic, and the other more celebratory, they both evoke story after story.

I heard our Governor General, Michaelle Jean, on CBC Radio yesterday. When speaking at Calgary’s Glenbow Museum on the weekend, she sang a song learned from her mother. In the Governor General’s words, “When there is nothing left, we have music. We have a song to sing. This is our hope.”

When the Olympic Torch came through Winnipeg, I stood on Portage Avenue as the temperatures approached minus 40. A young man beside me introduced himself as a Canadian whose roots were in Greece. The Torch had a way of bringing his worlds together. With his frozen cup of Tim’s he cheered the Olympic Flame.

Journeys have a way of evoking stories. Luke’s Journey to Easter is no exception. Luke’s Gospel will introduce us to those who met or accompanied Jesus on his journey to Easter. But each Christian community, each Bible Study Group, who reads Luke during these weeks will take that journey too.

Let us hear about your journey, whether at a personal level or as a group. You are invited to make use of the Discussion section of this site to add your story to our collective journey.

As we do, let’s pray for the continued work of The Salvation Army in Haiti, and its contribution to the Olympic Games in British Columbia.

Blessings - Ray

We do have a bible study group meeting each week to discuss and study - I will be sure to check in and see if they have some input. Most do not use computers ;)
