Unit 2 - Extra, Extra Good News

Junior Action Unit 2 - Winter 2007
Extra, Extra Good News
Description:
Should we send our young people out into their world to witness? It's pretty tough out there. Rejection could ruin their self-esteem, or worse yet, their faith.

But as Christians, and junior members of The Salvation Army, junior soldiers are already 'sent.' Every Christian has the privilege and responsibility of proclaiming God's good news. And, there is no way we as adults are going to evangelize the world without and an army of young witnesses to join us.

It is estimated that more than one-third of the earth's population (1.8 billion) are under the age of 15. Seventy-eight per cent of them are growing up in non-Christian setting or are being raised in a non-Christian home. EVERY believer needs to be sharing his or her faith!

Children witnessing to other children has advantages. Peers have clout. Young people know the language their friends speak. Kids have contacts you and I will never have. However, the child witness has some tough issued to face:

  • in a land of plenty, who needs God
  • when every sin is graphically portrayed on TV, there is little fear of judgement.
  • many parents don't think God is important, why should their children?
  • the influx of religions from all over the world has strengthened pluralism -- "all faiths have merit, they are all valid"

God SENDS FORTH his witnesses. He EMPOWERS them. As an instructor, you are called to EQUIP them. Junior soldiers need to know that witnessing is a spiritual battle, that they may be laughed at and rejected and that they need a heart of love and respect for those who have not yet received Christ. That's your challenge during this unit.

The aim of this unit, EXTRA, EXTRA GOOD NEWS is to review the plan of salvation and how to share it. The lessons include a study of:
1. THE PLAN OF SALVATION - Lessons one through five contain a basic, yet thorough, study of the plan of salvation. Salvation Army Doctrines 5, 6, 7 and 8 are mentioned as they related to the topics being studied. We are using the simplified version of the doctrines.
2. FOLLOWING JESUS - Lessons five and six contain a challenge for each young person to a personal commitment to Jesus Christ and a willingness to follow Jesus wherever he leads.
3. THE ARMY SHARES - Lessons seven through twelve show how the Army ministers and shares the good news to people in other parts of the world.
4. SHARING OUR FAITH - Lessons thirteen through seventeen point out that salvation is for the whosoever and give specific guidelines for witnessing to others about faith in Christ.
