Multi-Culturalism and The Salvation Army's Role
How does The SA fit into all this?
We are going to find in some places transient membership and because of this, we need to do a good job with our first contact. Building trust, loving people, making them feel they are of worth mentoring and educating, grounded in sound doctrinal and biblical teaching will foster relationship and provide the means through which people will desire to tell us where they are going so we can provide the link that the ‘fruit will remain.’
Educating our people (the newcomers) about the links The Salvation Army has throughout Canada is of paramount importance, including educating our core people on how to accept the newcomer.
Mind-Sets and Re-programming
The only mindset we need is the one that says we are here to save souls, grow saints and serve suffering humanity. Firstly, The SA will need to state if we are still a movement with a mission to save the lost. Secondly, The SA will need to critically decide what it will be and what will be priority, ‘Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.’
Could it be we are underestimating the wisdom of God in the twenty-first century? I sometimes wonder if we think that our God is in his dotage; somewhat ‘old-fashioned and silly in the head,’ or that ‘He’s gone bonkers.’
What should be our position now?
Let’s look at what Jehoshaphat did in one instance when he and Israel faced one of their greatest tests. In 2 Chron. 20, we see that a vast army had come against God’s people.
3 Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah. 4 The people of Judah came together to seek help from the Lord; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him. 5 Then Jehoshaphat stood up in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem at the temple of the Lord in the front of the new courtyard 6 and said: "O Lord, God of our fathers, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you.
